Sustainability, Technology, and Humanism aims to disseminate original and unpublished content in Spanish and English in the fields of Engineering and Technology and Social Sciences, in areas such as Engineering, Environment, Economics, Education, and related fields, with high scientific content that is recent and innovative, targeting the national and international academic community. Sustainability, Technology, and Humanism is an open-access publication, published electronically twice a year (January-June, July-December) at the beginning of each period, and funded by the Antonio Arévalo Technological Foundation - Unitecnar (Colombia). Its editorial policy includes the submission and publication, free of charge, of original works, reviews, and reflections, which undergo a rigorous review process aligned with the international standards established in the Code of Ethics and Best Practices (COPE), seeking to guarantee compliance with editorial and scientific quality.
General Criteria:
Originality. All manuscripts submitted to the journal must be original and unpublished and must not have been previously published or submitted simultaneously to two other publications. This criterion will be validated using the anti-plagiarism software "Turnitin". Manuscripts must belong to the areas described in the journal's scope and these characteristics must be declared when submitting work for consideration by the editorial committee.
Types of Manuscripts: The following are the document types accepted by the Journal for submission and initiation of the editorial process.
Scientific and Technological Research Article: An article that presents, in detail, the original results of completed research projects. These articles will have a maximum of 15 pages, including references. They will have at least 20 bibliographic references.
Reflection Article: A document that presents research results from an analytical, interpretive, or critical perspective of the author, on a specific topic, using original sources. They will have at least 20 bibliographic references.
Review Article. A document resulting from research that analyzes, systematizes, and integrates the results of published or unpublished research on a field in science or technology, in order to account for advances and development trends. It is characterized by presenting a careful literature review of at least 50 bibliographic references.
Manuscript Preparation and Submission: The following are the conditions that manuscripts submitted for publication to the Journal must meet, which are necessary for the work to be considered for the start of the editorial process:
- Submit in a Word-compatible file, on letter-size paper (21.59 cm x 27.54 cm), with 54 cm margins, Times New Roman font size 12, single spacing between paragraphs, and justified text.
- Maximum length of 15 pages, including the title page and list of references.
- The document must be written following the grammatical and syntactic rules of the language in which it is written. Use academic language.
- The first page must include: a) Title in the primary and secondary languages: The title (in Spanish and English) should be brief and concise with a maximum length of 150 words (Font size 16, Initial capital letter, Centered alignment); b) Author information: For each author: Full name, highest academic degree obtained, preferably institutional email address, institutional affiliation, ORCID (available at: http://orcid.org), city and country. (Font size 12, Centered alignment); Abstract: The abstract (in Spanish and English) should be analytical and contain a maximum of 300 words. Avoid the use of abbreviations and highly specialized terms. It should not contain equations, figures, or tables. The abstract should be structured as follows: Background, Objective, Methods, Results, Conclusion; Likewise, the structure of the Abstract should be: Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. (Size 10, Justified alignment); Keywords: The author must provide keywords (in Spanish and English) in alphabetical order, from 4 to a maximum of 7, that help identify the main topics or aspects of the article (It is recommended to use UNESCO thesauri). (Size 10, Justified alignment).
- The structure of the paper should be: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, and References. The Introduction should provide the reader with context on the topics covered in the article, including background, justification, and fundamental concepts. Materials and Methods should be presented with sufficient precision to allow the reader to understand and verify the research process. Previously published methods, such as indices or techniques, should only be briefly described with appropriate citations, unless modifications have been made. The sample size calculation and the sampling method used, if applicable, should be described. The type of statistical analysis should be mentioned. If an original methodology is used, the reasons for its use and its potential limitations must be explained.
- Results and Discussion should summarize the findings, relating the observations to other relevant studies and highlighting the contributions and limitations of each. Data or other material already discussed elsewhere should not be repeated in detail. Inferences drawn from the findings and their limitations should be mentioned, including deductions for future research. Conclusions: These sections concisely describe the authors' assessments of the work's development and the results reported in the manuscript. Acknowledgments: A short paragraph should be included to express gratitude to individuals and/or institutions that collaborated academically or financially in the development of the research.
- Tables and graphs should be numbered sequentially, mentioned within the explanatory text (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1), and include the respective source in their captions. Tables must be created using Word; inserting tables as graphic objects should be avoided. The maximum number of tables and figures to be included in the work is four. The title should be written with a center indent, initial capital letters, 8-point font, and placed above the table body.
- Tables, graphs, and charts must be submitted in a separate Excel document and sent digitally (.jpg or .riff, 300 dpi, 240 dpi) in high resolution. If the required quality is not met, the journal will not commit to publication. It is the author's responsibility to obtain and provide the journal with permission for the publication of any images.
- For equations, use consecutive numbers in parentheses at the far right. If the equation symbols have not been previously defined, define them immediately after the equation. They must be in 10-point italic font, using the Microsoft Word equation editor. It is necessary to avoid inserting equations as graphic objects.
v = x/t (1) Where:
v is the speed (m/s).
x is the distance traveled (m) t is the time (s).
To refer to an equation within the text, use "(1)", and not "Eq. (1)" or "equation (1)", except at the beginning of a sentence: "Equation (1) is used.
Citations within the text will be made using numbers in brackets according to the order of appearance; the Harvard system (author, year) will be avoided.
- Example: As shown in [3]; and according to [4] and [6]–[9].
- To cite more than one source at a time, it is preferable to list each of them with its own brackets, for example, "as indicated by several studies [1], [3], [5]..." instead of "as indicated by various studies [1, 3, 5]...".
- The format for citing references is defined by the IEEE and they must be prepared according to the following scheme:

All references must be cited within the text, with the number in square brackets, for example [8], and all at the end, numbered according to their order of appearance in the article. The word “reference” or its abbreviation “ref.” should not be used. References not cited in the text and those from unreliable sources such as blogs should be removed.
Guidelines for Manuscript Submission:
The article can be submitted to the Editorial Committee of Sustainability, Technology, and Humanism via the Open Journal Systems platform. Prior registration as an Author is required.
Afterward, log in to the platform and submit the article along with the following supporting documents:
Letter of Originality: This letter addresses the following aspects: that the work is original and unpublished and has not been published in other journals or media; the contribution of the submitted work; confirmation of the authorship of all authors and their intellectual contribution; and approval of the final version of the article. If the authors wish, they may recommend three experts as potential reviewers, providing their contact information. Proposed reviewers must meet the following requirements: a minimum academic degree of Master's or Doctorate, recent scientific output relevant to the topic of the submitted article, and institutional affiliation different from that of the authors. It must be completed in the format established by the journal.
Copyright Transfer Agreement: This form requests that authors grant ownership of their copyright so that their article and related materials can be published in any form or medium. Through this document, they transfer the rights to the journal. It is recommended to follow the template for the Copyright Transfer Agreement.
Author Data Update Form: This form requests authors' personal information, academic background, and scientific output. It is recommended to follow the template for the form.
Tables and Figures: These must be submitted separately as .jpg or .riff files at 300 dpi. Statistical graphs must be submitted in Excel format.
Supplementary Files: If photographs, drawings, diagrams, or any other visual material, other than tables, are used in the text, the originals, properly labeled, must be attached, as well as the digital files indicating the software used for their creation. If using a figure taken from another author and therefore protected by copyright, all necessary information for proper attribution must be included, along with written authorization from the author or publisher of the publication.
Review and Publication Process:
Initial Review Phase. Once a manuscript is received, the Editorial Committee verifies compliance with the requirements established by the Journal in the Author Guidelines. Submissions may be rejected in the first evaluation for the following reasons: a) the topic is not aligned with the Journal's areas of coverage; b) it is not original work (verification of matches using the Turnitin tool); c) non-compliance with the manuscript preparation and presentation guidelines; d) relevance and scope of the research. Manuscripts that meet these criteria will begin the peer review process. The estimated time for this phase is 15 business days.
Peer Review Phase: The review system is “double-blind,” meaning the authors will not know the identities of the reviewers, and the reviewers will not know the author(s)' identities, thus maintaining the impartiality of the evaluation. Manuscripts accepted for peer review are sent to at least two external national or international reviewers with academic and research qualifications and expertise in the field. A third reviewer will be sent if any of the initial reviews are negative or if no response is received from any of the reviewers within fifteen days. Decision: The reviewers' decisions can be: a) Accepted: The work will be published as received, with only minor adjustments for spelling and style. b) Accepted with minor changes: The work will be published once the authors comply with and/or provide supporting documentation for the adjustments suggested by the reviewers. These will be reviewed by the Editorial Committee and/or the peer reviewer (if deemed necessary), who will decide whether or not to accept them. c) Revision and new evaluation: the work must be corrected in both content and form according to the suggestions given by the reviewers. The new version of the work will again be evaluated by the peers, who will determine whether the authors have followed the respective suggestions. d) Rejected: The work is not recommended for publication. The average review time can take a maximum of 6 months; this time may be shorter considering the timely responses from the assigned reviewers.
Editorial Decision Phase. Once the Editor and Editorial Committee receive the results of the referees' evaluations, they will define and communicate their Editorial decision to the corresponding author, providing sufficient justification. If the manuscript is accepted with revisions, the Journal Editor will return the manuscript and the referees' recommendations to the corresponding author. These revisions must be implemented and submitted to the Editorial Committee within 15 calendar days using the CHANGE CONTROL FORM, along with a letter from the author to each reviewer responding to their suggestions.
Final Review Phase. Style Editing, Design, and Publication. Once the manuscript is approved for publication, the style editing, layout, and publication process begins on the editorial management platform. This period may take a maximum of one month.
Note: Due to the evaluation processes involved, it is not possible to guarantee authors immediate publication of their work.
